I am about to make an offer on a boat from a private party and would like to use a contract that includes the necessary conditions. Since I am not a broker I do not have a copy of a "standard boat contract. Does anyone one of a site where I can download a contract or do you have a sample you can send me?

They have lots of stuff. OTOH, why not keep it simple? We put an offer in on our C34 in 1998 on one piece of paper: "We offer $xxxxx for boat hull #yyyyy, subject to sea trials and survey, with a 10% (refundable) down payment." Both the seller and we signed and dated it, and never had any problems. No matter what you write, there's always the potential hassle of dealing with counteroffers after the initial offer, based on sea trials and the results of the survey. What more can you possibly write up front in an offer that will cover all eventualities? What else do you need? We did this for our C22 in 1982, and our C25 in 1987 as well as this one. I haven't read any offer contracts myself. Good luck, Stu

Thanks Stu

I agree, I've bought two previous boats on basically a hand shake but this is a bigger boat(35') with potentially more problems. Surveyor suggested I use a contract to specify when the deal would close, what would be unacceptable in a survey, contingent on financing, insurance, etc. Does seem a bit much but hey, what do I know.

The biggest thing to get right is the transfer of title. The details are different for a Coast Guard documented vessel vs. one with a regular state title. If you don't have all your ducks in a row when you finalize payment, you could find youself paying for a boat that someone else has a claim on. I'd suggest you get some professional help, just to be safe.

I can email it to you....

the Yacht Broker's form. It's full of CYA for the broker, but works with a little lining out. Let me know.
