pumpout problem

Hi, Peggie, I have a haunted holding tank! The outlet fitting goes to a PVC Y fitting, and from there one branch goes to the deck fitting and the other to the macerator pump (factory setup). Sometimes the pumpout goes fine; other times I am unable to get anything out from either the macerator or the deck fitting. When this happens (while using the macerator pump) the sounds of the pump are those of having liquid in it, not the high-pitched sound that is normally heard at the end of a normal pumpout when the tank is empty. There is a "gurgling" sound coming from the tank, and lots of air bubbles can be seen in the water near the pumpout through-hull. I though I had found the problem, as the hose connection between the tank and the Y-fitting had several seperations in its wall with blisters, and I thought that the inner lining of the hose was collapsing under suction and obstructing the flow. After I changed this piece of pipe to a good white hose, it was OK for a few tries, but is bacf to its old intermittant ways again. any ideas? Thanks.

Check your tank vent, George

When you can neither pump out nor dump out, it can only mean either a clog, a kinked hose, or the pump is pulling a vacuum...which can be caused by a clog or a kink...and from the symptoms you describe, it sounds like your vent line could have a kink in it...sometimes it lets enough air in, sometimes it doesn't.

I think vent is OK...

because I removed the tank gauge sender unit, to open the tank to vent it, and no improvement. I guess there's something floating in the tank that causes an intermittant blockage. Does that sound likely? I'd like to install an inspection port to deal with this. What kind to use that will be water-tight? Thanks again.

Beckson makes inspection port retrofit kits...

When installed correctly, they don't leak. Standard size is 3"...they also make 4" and 6". Unless your tank is over 50 gallons, I wouldn't go larger than 4". West Marine used to show 'em in their catalog and you may still be able to order one through them...or call Ronco Plastics. 714-259-1385. If your problem isn't a venting issue, an intermittent clog is about the only other possibility...a chunk of paper towel that's floating around in the tank could very well be the culprit.
