I have my sailboat docked at my house (I live on a canal). I am trying to get a pumpout system for my portapotty designed. My plan is to do the standard pumpout and vent line setup. This will be handy for when I go to marinas that have the tank pumped. But I also want to be able to pumpout the portapotty when docked at home. I was originally thinking about a Jabsco macerator pump that would suck the tank the same as the commercial pumpout does at the marina. I would run the outlet hose to a portable (on wheels) RV-type waste container, and then roll it to my sewer plug in the yard and dump into it. But the Jabsco does not have the lift needed to suck the waste out. I then found the Whale manual sanitation pump, which claims it can lift (suck) 15-feet. I need about 6-feet of suction capability. Again, I would pump the waste to portable RV waste container I hope you see where I am trying to go with this. Has anyone tried to setup a system like this for home use, or have any suggestions (Peggy?)? Thanks, PeteC

I forgot a couple of points. I am thinking the pump would not be mounted on the boat, but attached to the external portable RV waste tank. If the pump was on the boat it would require a more complicated piping arrangement and its only use would be to pump the waste overboard, which I do not want to do since I don't think I would ever be in an area that allows overboard discharge. Or if in a pinch, and in an area allowing overboard dumping, I could remove the Portapotty tank and dump it. Also, my boat is a 2001 Mac26X. So I am at the 26-foot limit where I do not think having the pump internal to the boat would be legal.

Whale of a Deal?
The Edson Manual Pumps start at $300+, the Jabsco higher than that. These look like heavy duty commercial items, which is probably overkill for what I need. The Whale BP0527 Manual (pump handle) Toilet Waste Pump looks like it should do the same thing as the Edson, but is obviously lighter duty. I can get this pump for about $110. <www.whalepumps.com/marine/product_list/12/68/> I think I will go with the Whale. I will let you know how it works out. Thanks

Cost out everything you need...
If you buy just the Whale pump, you'll also need to buy a tank to pump out into that's at least 10% bigger than your holding tank if you don't want to risk overflowing it...a cart to take it up your dock to the sewer plug (you can't carry it...sewage weighs 8.33 lbs/gal, plus the weight of the tank), and the hoses and fittings you'll need for both...so you may not save much by buying the Whale pump and all of that separately instead of buying the Edson 282 or 285 system complete. (Did you scroll down far enough on the Edson site to find these? http://www.edsonpumps.com/pumpout_products/DataSheets/PDS_285_99.pdf_ http://www.edsonpumps.com/pumpout_products/DataSheets/PDS_282MB18_99.pdf So don't buy anything till you've costed out everything.
