I recently installed all new Odorsafe sanitation hoses on my Hunter 31. The previous hoses were all Odorsafe "guaranteed" not to permeate but, they did. I understand the importance of not allowing the waste material to stand in the hoses for an extended period of time, guarantee or no guarantee. I also understand how to ensure that the commode to the tank line gets properly cleared. What I do not understand is how to sanitize the tank pump-out line. That line on my boat runs up hill the whole way to the deck fitting. Therefore, it will always have the tank contents standing in it from the tank outlet up the hose to the current level of the tank contents. I have thought about sending the tank treatment compounds down the line from the deck instead of pumping them into the tank through the commode. Any better suggestions? Thank you.

the tank, there's no way to avoid leaving waste sitting in the tank discharge line to the level in the tank unless you ALWAYS leave the tank empty, after thoroughly flushing it--and the pumpout line--out with clean fresh water. Nor is there any way to "sanitize" that line...putting tank chemicals down the pumpout won't help. This is why I prefer putting all the tank fittings on the top of the tank, with a pickup tube inside the tank on the discharge. But unless you have the clearance above the tank for the fittings (at least 5"), that's not always possible. The only other solution would be use hard pipe for the tank pumpout line...at least enough of it to reach the top of the tank, then switch to hose. Btw, SeaLand "Odorsafe" has a 5 year warranty against odor permeation. If that's what you had to replace in less than 5 years--and can still prove it--they'll pay for the replacement hose.

using PVC but, for a number of reasons, went back to the Odorsafe approach. Maybe a simple vertical pipe coming off the tank's exit fitting to the top of the tank will not be too difficult to retro-fit. Do you think a 90 degree elbow will give me a problem? BTW, AER Supply in TX made good on the hose replacement even after the five years and without any evidence of purchase.

90 is not a problem...
In fact, at least 90% of tanks have 90 degree discharge fittings. How were you able to go straight up from your tank without using a 90?
