Steve,
First, opening the thru hull that allows water into the toilet to "flush" the toilet, has nothing to do with pumping out the waste tank.

To pump out, you will remove the "waste" cap on the port side of the cockpit coaming. Attach the pumpout adapter that is connected to the pumpout hose, then turn on the pumpout machine and suck out the waste until there is none left. I repeat the process by adding some fresh water into the tank(via a hose) and suck out again.
From your comments...it sounds like your vent line is clogged and causing the pressurized or vaccum condition you refer to. The vent line serves to equalize for air displaced either from the pumpout or from flushing the head....does this make sense?
The vent line is on top of the waste tank and probably runs to the base of a port side stanchion....you need to remove and clear the hose as well as the fitting on the tank and the "hole" at the base of the stanchion. The tank was probably overfilled and waste went up the vent line and caused the clog.

I think this will cure your problem....good luck

thank so much
this sounds like the wayy to go. I was thinking the pressure was relieved from the valve going in to the head, or the head it self.
Thanks

You will not collapse your tank even if your vent is plugged up because it will draw air through the head if you get too much vacuum. My marina got a new pump out system and it drains that tank so fast that the vent can’t keep up. It’s kind of handy because I can give a fresh water rinse by running water from the sink hand set. I don’t even need to pump.
