Its time to replace the the halyard on my Hunter 33.5. Any suggestions on the best way to connect the new halyard to the old halyard in order to pull the line through the mast. Steve

I've also been wondering about that. So far the best idea I've had is to connect them by sewing the ends together. Doesn't need to be perfect or pretty...just strong. I haven't tried it yet but will next winter (checked my line and it seems fine but I like knowing how old sertain things are on my boat and since I bought it used this year, I don't know how old it is).

New/old halyard
Sewing the two ends together works for me. I also cover the stitches with some light tape to avoid anything hanging up when it passes over the masthead sheave. But this method presumes you will cut off the old shackle in order to sew the old end to the end (the other end of which has a new shackle). But if you want to save the old halyard and shackle, say to keep as a spare or to use elsewhere on your boat, I sew a loop in the end of the old halyard. Attach a messenger line to it, and hoist the old halyard off. Attach the messenger line to a loop you've sewn in the new halyard, and hoist it up into place.

I Butt-sewed them the first time.
But I like the idea that is put forward most often on this forum. Take a large paper clip and bend it open in the shape of an "S". Pierce each end thru each end of the old and new halyard to join then. Tape them to cover any ragged edges and then pull it through. Whether you butt-sew them or use the paper clip, be sure to tape them for strength and smoothness.

Duct tape
It is no good for ducts but it works for this purpose. I use about 8 inches and wrap it lengthwise around both lines.

Get the whole splice...
... if you cut off the old shackle. We sewed the butt ends together but didn't cut off the pre-splice where it ran up the halyard. That part's thicker and wouldn't go through the sheave. Had to bring it down and start over. Mac

...your shackle is eyespliced in then you have no choice but to cut it out. However, if you use the long eyesplice (which I do), then use a 1/8" messenger attached to the butt end and pull the messenger through. Now attach the butt end of the new halyard to the messenger and pull it back again. Afterwards you can attach the shackle to the long eyesplice that you already spliced in. The added benefit here is that you can replace a broken shackle without removing or cutting the halyard.

No duct tape!
Sew the ends together using fishing line, get a nice tight fit and it will still roll over the sheeves. Trust me.

When you use duct tape
it helps to slightly dog-ear a corner on the trailing end to use for getting it off easier. I prefer the Abu Graib brand. Accept no cheap imitations. Don't leave it on too long in the hot sun either or you might agree with Bill.

Sew together with Kevlar Thread
I did my haylards last year. I used kevlar threat to sew the two ends together. You can find Kevlar thread cheap at your local Flyfishing shop. That stuff is powerful stuff. I taped the two ends with a small piece of tape to keep it from snagging things.

Why worry about the splice
Draw your new halyard up the mast sewing on to the other end? At least then you have a spare if not some what old halyard.
