I am about to start the process of pulling my SVE8. I have a small oil leak I need to find and fix. While it's out I am going to clean, paint and sound proof the engine compartment, and rewire most of the boat.

Anything I really need to watch out for? Or better does anyone have any links to other similar jobs?

Thanks very much.

Just a reminder to do the shaft work while the engine is out. The shaft can come out without regard to the rudder which will save you a lot of time. Replace the cutlass bearing, the stuffing box hose and clamps, and check the stern tube. This assumes that the boat is out of the water of course.

Take digital pics so you remember where thing go, especially the electrical connections. But don't forget the various contol cabels and fuel lines. Print out the pics and keep them in a book. Then Label ALL of the connenctions with tape and a marking pen. Label BOTH sides of the connections.

Also as long as the motor is out consider relpacing the rudder post packing. It's a pain to do when the engine is in place.......

another trick.

use a pencil to mark the exact locations of the motor mounts. pull the bolts form the stringers with out adjusting the mounts. This makes it a lot easier to get it back in in exactly the right place. do the same with the shaft.
mark the shaft with a marker where it goes. Then make a small v shaped block to set the shaft on when you pull it out. this will help you get it back in the center of the log. If you plan to pull the shaft just mark where the block hits the shaft and put it back there when you install the engine.

This will help to take a lot of effort out of realingnment of the engine and shaft.

Outstanding! Thanks very much. I was trying to figure out how I was going to replace the cutlass bearing because I can't drop my rudder where she is sitting and it totally blew past me that I could take it out into the cabin once the motor is out.

I do plan on installing a drippless stuffing box, as I am trying to get the old girl to maintain a completely dry bilge. Especially since it's only about 2 inches deep at most.

Thanks for the help.
