PULL THE BOAT OR NOT

When I lived on LI, and had dockage where there was exposure to the SE, I would get my boat out of there and go to a sheltered marina for tropical weather. It cost money and time when I had to think about other storm prep. But I never had damage to my boat. To decide whether or not to move the boat I would do my best to decide what quadrant of the storm we would see and what direction the wind was likely to be. Anything north or east was fine at that dock. So it made a big difference if the eye would pass to the east or west of me. So my answer is, how sheltered is your marina (With storm surge) and where do you expect to get wind from. If you're not comfortable with that, move the boat.
As far as wind intensity goes no one really knows. We all expect you to get something. You won't be able to move it if it intensifies at a certain point. That point is probably sometime this weekend. If you miss it your insurance will have to protect you.

Still too early to tell; wait until Saturday. If by noon Saturday you do not like the prospects drive up there and trailer the boat out to higher ground away from any possible storm surge.

Once it gets closer, you have an either/or choice:
1. Pull it, or
2. Increase your insurance coverage.

Or both?

I’d hate to see someone’s big boat (which is more difficult to pull) get damaged simply because some little boat didn’t get trailered away.

My opinion and not to be used in a lawsuit! As it looks today:
Long beach will get 2-3 feet of surge as the future Marco goes west of ya..not any appreciable wind.. when Laura comes ashore to the east of you, there will be 3-5 feet of surge and some sustained high TS force winds.. I believe I'd make plans to pull it and trailer to higher ground to accommodate Laura. Today through Sunday will tell the (almost) final story.. Good Luck !!

I kept my 23.5 in Long Beach before Katrina. I'd be ready to pull it on Sunday and reassess at that point at least if you do make the trip you can go to Fayard's and get a poboy.

If I think about it too much I am gonna end up offering to do it in exchange for a couple of them for lunch and then dinner.

I never really thought about my boat as a battering ram, but I'm at an inland lake. You make a good pont.

I always pulled my 23.5 when the word Hurricane was being discussed. The 23.5 has a lot of windage and was easy to pull. While its on the trailer, I used the opportunity to take a ride and sail in a different venue.

We're in Destin on vacation. The crew of the schooner we went out on last night is bringing it into the bay and removing all her sails just to be safe. The beaches have two red flags out this morning. I'm waiting for the beach patrol to grab this idiot out on a SUP without a PFD.
