I want to install a puck style of transducer on my Nimble. Will the boat's construction(core material, etc.)prevent this type of installation from working correctly? Is there a "sweet spot"on board somewhere that others have used? Please help! David

Depth/fishfinder transducer puck mounting

Put the transducer puck in a leak proof plastic bag with about a quart of water. Then position bag w/puck wherever on the inside of the hull you are considsering for installation. The more horizontal the better. Use duct tape to hold in position, especially the puck. If it works with the bag of water, it will work with the puck mounted with some quick-set epoxy. ps: Test first by holding the puck in the lake and turning the unit on.

Water well

David, I don,t know the best spot is to mount the puck. But probably the easiest is to use a piece of plastic pipe a little larger than the puck. Cut it about 3 in long, fit it to the hull and use a sealant to cement it in place. Just add water and drop in the puck. If you have a good clear hull you,ll get good clear readings. Use a cheap sealant so you can pop it off if needed. We used this on a previous boat and it worked fine.

Use slow setting epoxy

The manufacturers of transducers that shoot through hulls recommend the use of slow set epoxy. This is to eliminate any air bubbles.

I know that ...

... using epoxy is common to glue a transducer puck to the inside of your hull, but it makes moving the puck -- or even salvaging it -- almost impossible. Although not recommended, I have used ordinary silicone caulk for these kinds of pucks and it works well and makes moving the puck easy. The key to using silicone is to make sure there are no air bubbles in the stuff when you seat the puck in it. I rough sand the area where the puck is going, plop on some silicone and smear it around with a popsicle stick to smooth out any air bubbles, then stick the puck on it. Works for me.
