FYI... I don't believe I get any water from my installation. I checked it the other day after reading the information above, and the area was bone dry. When I installed it, I did run the hose very high. I was able to get it in the starboard wall of the vanity cabinet above the transmission on my boat. You may want to try to run the hose higher and see if it would eliminate the need for a collection bottle. It was a fun project with the invaluable help of Maine Sail's documentation ;-)

Yeah I agree Schatzi the higher you can get it the better it would be to withstand the surge from reverse. Unfortunately I already have the bottle as high as I can get it in the engine compartment. I am also thinking that part of it may have to do with having a large 3 blade prop which puts a lot of thrust in reverse and thus pushes more water into the bottle. I am happy with the installation and yes, I agree, having Mainsails write up was very helpful.

Stupid question: Why not close the end of the tube once the air has been removed from the seaql? The Earlier models, including the one one on my previous boat did not have the tube and had to be burped manually.

Cheers

I ran hose into shower sump.
On the top of the hose (as high as possible) install vent to break
siphon and connect to shower sump.

Well there is one good reason why this is not recommended.
If your water pressure from propeller overcomes spring pressure in PSS seal – you have a leak!
I believe that is reason why manufacturer likes open end discharge.

Tantor, I am afraid that what you are suggesting cannot happen. As a matter of fact it would act in the opposite direction. The water pressure would "push" the carbon towards the seal with greater force. Additionally with the shaft collar there would be little likelihood that anything would happen at all. The seal line is just there to vent the air.

I am afraid you are right. I just had brain fart.
Sorry for confusion I was thinking that spring works again water pressure….., but you are right.
