I have a PYS PSS Shaft Seal system on my Hunter 27, Yanmar GM1. The bellows is getting quite old and lacks adequate compression abilities resulting in leakage during transition from forward to reverse gear. No amount of adjustment has been capable of correcting this problem. Are there suitable replacement bellows for the PSS units? The balance of the shaft seal items appear in good working order. Thanks in advance, Doug B.

Good contacts

Your best bet is to go to the suppliers: PYI web page http://www.pyiinc.com/ (also below as related link) and email address: info@pyiinc.com and PSS Shaft Seal web site http://www.shaftseal.com/ and email address: Info@ShaftSeal.com

Just for info reasons how old is the pss seal ? I'm going to install one this spring and you are the first (to my knowledge) to have to replace the bellows. I was under the impression they were good for 5 to 10 years. Thanks for the feedback !

It's Not Only the Bellows

About ten years ago I installed a LasDrop Shaft seal. It and PSS were rated equal by Practical Sailor. I have not had any problems until the last year and the reason is not the bellows but the alignment of the rotating and stationary seal. No matter how well your engine is aligned, over time the two parts are not going to always be in perfect align. If they are not, then one will wear different and when they are or are not rotating they will leak. That is my problem now. No matter how much pressure I put on the bellows the seal leaks. So it is not only that you have to replace the bellows every five to ten years, you have to replace the entire unit. For this reason I am switching to the dripless packing that has received many good reports as posts on this website. I can fix it when it starts and not have to pull the boat out at substantial cost. No more shaft seal types for me. "Keep it simple stupid" is my motto. Yes, I had good service for about nine years, but the problem comes like all others on a boat, without warning. Now I have pull the boat out and the expense. With the dripless, I can fix it in the water for alot less cost.

Dripless Packing

Ron, Where did you read about the dripless packing. I was about to put in a PSS on my new boat but had heard about the packing. Marc

Bellows

Hello Doug, Thanks for the note. The bellows are replaceable. All need to do is to specify the shaft diameter and stern tube diameter. This will allow PYI to provide the correct bellow and hose clamps. The cost will be apx. $58.00 plus freight. You can also contact C-2 and they can also provide the unit. Hope this helps Kevin
