Well, I'm trying to get ready for the delivery of my 310 and already hopelessly thinking of ways to upgrade and spend MORE money! I have been reading the threads on the 310 packing gland and how some have replaced the the flax with dripless material. I was considering doing this as a dry bilge is appealing, but then I read about the PSS Shaft Seal. Dripless packing looks to cost around $50-$70 whereas the PSS is approx $275. I am thinking of just going with the PSS- is it truly maintenance free? Has anyone else tried to decide which way to go. I wonder how long before I'd make my money back from not having to replace the dripless packing every ? years. I am looking hard at the Packing Gland/coupling Assembly diagram on Pg 55 of the manual and I can't find the diameter of the stern tube. To buy the PSS you need the diameter of the shaft (1") and the stern tube (?). Anybody know what it is? Any comments on my decision to just go with the PSS and be done with it? Thanks. Thanks Sceptre Sailor & Maine Sail

Thanks guys. My 310 is a 2004. Very helpful info on the changing out the packing gland. I plan on adding the "S" to the mast wiring and will add the PSS from Catalinaowners. I'll check all thru-hulls, step the mast, tune the rigging, splash and if I installed the new PSS shaft right and the boat doesn't sink, I'll align the engine/shaft. Thanks for all the info. Cheers all.......... Will Seattle
