PSS Dripless and new shaft

Hold on here.

If you cut the shaft and replace the cutlass you most likely will have to pull the motor to access the new shaft and install the new transmission coupler. I can't imagine it would be easy to do with the motor in place.

A few months back I refit my stuffing box and coupler. I also could not get the box or coupler off the old shaft. I used a Sawzall and cut the trans couple off. It was made of some fairly soft metal.

I then slid the stuffing box off the end as well as the hose for the shaft log. Replaced all the odd bit and cleaned and repacked the box before putting on a new coupler.

I did exactly that on the C30 I used to own. I replaced the shaft (after cutting out the old one), the stuffing box hose, and the stuffing box. There was no need at all to move the motor. I used a split coupler, by the way, which I think is the way to go if you ever want to remove it in the future.

Why do you have to pull the motor? What prevents the shaft from coming in from the rear?
The shaft goes in from the stern, through the PSS, and into the coupler. That bolts to the tranny.

No need to pull the motor.

I used the split coupler. Definitely the way to go.

Catalina offered a three blade prop as an option on my boat (1995). So there shouldn't be a clearance problem to go to a three blade.

Thanks Jim, Gary had me worried there. Our boat is a solid 2 1/2 hours away so it's not easy to just go take a look.

Hey folks,

Happy New Year! Just wanted to post an update; I cut the prop shaft out of the boat yesterday. Really surprised at how easy it was. Used my 4 1/2" angle grinder and it took all of about 2 minutes. Now I have to weigh my options and find a replacement shaft etc.

http://www.rosesmarine.com/ in Gloucester Mass is a good resource for the shaft. Custom made to your specs and very fast turnaround. Used them when I replaced my shaft last spring after a recommendation from a member in the 310 forum. And as previously mentioned go to the split coupling. Very easy to work with.

Yup. I used them too. I think I might have been the one who recommended them.

Great shop. They know their business.

Go with the split coupling.
