Provisioning a three day get away on a 22

I am fortunate to have a wife that loves to sail and take the tiller and solo the sheets. Beer and beans may change all that. Also we are talking about the interior of a Catalina 22, that is an automatic dutch oven.

You can also make premeasured mixes. For breakfast I often fix a thick pancake filled with ham and cheese and cooked brown in bacon fat. Simple recipe: 1/4 cup each flour and rolled oats, as much cheese and ham as the size of an egg, a 1/4 teaspoon salt and a half teaspoon of baking powder, put it in a zipper bag with one fresh egg and pack it so that it won't get smashed. When you are ready mix the dry and the egg and a little water < probably about a quarter cup, the batter will spread with a little coaxing, heat a skillet with bacon or chicken fat and add the batter and cook until brown and turn it over and cook the other side. It makes one six inch diameter half inch thick breakfast that just needs juice and coffee. Fix the first one and share it while the second is cooking.

One "trick" to make the C22 "sleepable" for adults is to lower the table and build a plywood "deck" with fiddle rails underneath so when the galley is slid aft you stick this board in the space between the inboard end of the lowered table and the fiberglass that holds the galley. Take the backrest cushions off the dinette and flop 'em on the board. This makes a huge bed for the adults and the kid can sleep up forward. Keep the center cushion off the head and you can use it late at night. A little creep for the kid, but heck he or she is just a kid, right? This is a basic great mod for a C22.

I consider myself a porta potty expert... sorry, Peggy.

My advice on the porta potti...

Don't pee in it. Pee overboard. Pee takes up too much space. The only person who gets to pee in mine is my wife, and then only at night when it is cold.

Get the 5-gallon model... better safe than sorry.

You would be crazy to empty a porta potty into a bucket and then keep the bucket on board. It will be gross, it may eventually spill, and you will regret it.

I use the blue tablets or the blue liquid for my porta potty, and they work pretty well, but the best thing I ever did was to start adding some bleach to the fresh water in the porta potty. It keeps the smell down a lot and just has a way of helping to keep everything smelling more sanitary.

Empty the porta potty as soon as you can when you get off the water -- almost every rest stop on the highway has a dumping station. Just remember to find a way to suppress your gag reflex when you start emptying it.

Read this next part carefully...
1. DO NOT come home and simply put the full porta potty in your basement and leave it there until your next trip.
2. If you come home with a full porta potty, DO NOT let your wife watch while you dump it out in the toilet.
3. Clean the porta potty after you get home (with a hose and one of those rubber hazmat suits if possible) or else you won't be able to stand the stench inside the boat the next time you use it.

....as they give us freedom to not plan our trips around visits to marinas or other places to dump them. Probably not needed for a 3 day trip, but you might consider them in the future. I was a real skeptic when I first heard about them, but we would never go back to a porta-pottie. I talk about them on this page....

They are amazing cost is around $2 each but there is no smell, and it's legal to dispose in regular trash.

For Me the easy way to P is to use an empty 2 liter bottle. gatorade bottle, or similar.
Put a little red cake color in and dispose properly.

rock climbers on trips up tall mountains make a tube with pvc pipe (I have only seen 4") about 3 feet long with caps and put the bags in there.

port stern lazarette is huge on my 75' model, not sure of the new boats, I pack the light and bulky things in there. great place for the used bags in a trash bag or bucket.

people have been dealing with waste disposal for a long time but if you don't eat the waste disposal problem isn't.
The quest was for provisionong for a three day get away in a catalina 22.
Plan some meals worthy of the need to pay this much attention to the portapotty.

I am hoping the meals will involve shrimp, shrimp, and more shrimp. We were there a couple of weeks ago and fresh shrimp was selling for $1.99 lb. I hear you can even get it cheaper off the boats. It costs $6.99 lb where we live only 60 miles away.

Those breakfast pancakes in an eariler post would work with shrimp and the right seasonings. Lots of little shrimp in a pancake batter with some sliced spring onions and some bacon.

K.I.S.S. Decades ago my wife bought a Seal-A-Meal at Sears. Put food (spaghetti, stew, chili if you don't have guests) in bag, heat seal top, freeze, boil when hungry. No cans to throw away. Like Green Giant veggies in boiling bag. Store frozen stuff in a seperate cooler with dry ice. Make sure cabin is well vented or store cooler in cockpit at night. Bisquik dry pancake batter in the small plastic bottle. Makes enough for two. Prefry bacon/spam and put in ziplok bag. In the military we used to say that Spam was pork that failed it's physical.:naughty: You can buy eggs in a milk carton. Five gal. jerry cans are bulky and hard to store. 1 gal are easier also freeze water in 1/2 gal plastic milk jugs. Keeps reefer dry and you have fresh water when they thaw. Don't forget to make cookies. Pack some trail mix for snacking. We used to go to Catalina and Santa Cruz Islands for a week at a time this way. Five star dining. No 7-11 when we got there. It's like camping in the woods with no woods. Take that Carnival. If your really gastronomically adventurous go to Army surplus store and by MRE's. There should be lots because the guys in the Army won't eat 'em. Fair winds.
