Protecting your face and skin from the wind

Hi all - the one thing that I hear over and over from dermatologists is moisturize, moisturize, moisturize.

Thought I'd ask here to see if anyone has a solution that they've come to love. Sunblock is a must, but I've also heard of folks using things like a thin layer of vaseline to cut down on the wind and protect the skin.

And I imagine there is also a camp that wears the wind damage as a badge of pride... :D

I have been using Harkenderm products for the past 3 years. Got a sample at the boat show. Showed the product to my Dermatologist (I call him Nitro Man. He loves to spray that little can). He gave it a thumbs up due to contents in the sunscreen. Last while sailing. I have avoided burns. It rubs in to the skin and saves me the White Paint nose and cheeks.
Liked it so much bought a starter kit form my fairer skinned brother.

I'd recommend it.
Give them a shout who knows they may send you a sample.

Most of the time I wear two types of sunblock and a mask. It was interesting when the Coast Guard came by for an unrelated question at the entrance to the inlet and I forgot I had it on.

I hate sunblock so I generally go with a big hat, long pants and long sleeve shirt.

I know Champaign-Urbana. I gave several years of my youth to the Air Force just 10 miles north. Other than Lake Michigan, where do you sail?

SPF 50 as per my dermatologist and hopefully never seeing again oncologist. Wear a hat now and have long sleeve tech shirts, may forgo the shorts as per the reason I have an oncologist. Got a sweet scar on my right leg though.....

This will be my first summer with a "grown-up" sailboat, so I'll be starting at Clinton Lake (about 35 minutes west). Planning Lake Erie at the end of June for a Catalina 22 trip organized from this forum.

Wow, a sunblock/skin care product made for sailors. Didn't know that was even a thing! I'll check this out this summer!

I'm also a veteran of numerous nitro touch treatments and have endured the scowl of dermatologists for decades now. Wide brimmed hats, Neutrogena SPF 45 - 70 sunblock (I do not re-apply nearly enough), Eucerin Daily Hydration Lotion which has SPF 20 every morning after I shave for moisturization and sunblock, Eucerin Intensive Repair Lotion (Without Sunblock) for moisturizing Sun exposed skin) and a generic moisturizer on non-exposed skin. I stay in the shade as much as possible. I wear long sleeve performance fabric shirts with SPF 50 as much as possible even when it's hot. And use a face cover when I feel direct sunlight on my face.
I had a "Pre-melanoma" removed maybe ten years ago. It was on my back - not an area that gets that much Sun. Left a scar and a story.

Fishing gaiters. UPF 30,50 And you can scowl at the jet skis without taking off your mask. Combine it with a hat and wraparound sunglasses and you're set.

I just go natural…

But some sunscreen until I get a base tan. I wear a hat most of the time.

my 84 year old mother covers up a bit more ! To be fair, it was chilly that day…

We were out sailing today in sunny and windy conditions. The Bimini kept the direct sun at bay, but the wind sucked the moisture out of my skin. Vaseline Intensive Care seemed to help.

It depends on where you sail, down in the Gulf Coast the ambient humidity keeps the skin moist and the wind just cools a little. We do recommend sun screen for those lacking the adequate pigmentation of a year long tan and sunglasses to protect the blues.

Harken is a great company, and Harkenderm a great division. I had heard about the free samples at the Newport boat show a couple of years ago. When I contacted Harken on Facebook they referred me to a Harkenderm rep who sent me a lovely gift box of sun block, moisturizer, and some of those bracelets to measure UV exposure. Very nice.

The products are great, but expensive. However, they do go a long way, you only need a thin film, and it is waterproof. Highly recommended.

You can read about it, and but the product here:
Harken Derm

I haven't found it cheaper anywhere else. The "kit" of sunscreen and moisturizer is $79 for 100ml (3.4 oz.) each - ouch! But worth it, in my opinion.

Sunscreen, broad hat, white long sleeve nylon shirt, long pants, a beard, and long hair. See how well it's worked for me?
