Protecting the sale

HI all, I have a basic core question here regarding selling your boat. I've had my Oday 23 listed here at Odayowners.com and also eBay. Now I do have three people very interested in the boat, two of which I've personally spoken to on the phone and discussed the boat. The eBay listing auction didn't reach reserve price, but during the time I had the boat listed, a sailor in Winnipeg, Canada was emailing a series of questions about the boat. Very knowledgeable and typical questions I'd ask as a buyer. Now, does anyone have any recommendations on verifying funds. The sailor in Canada missed the bid closing, but he's emailed me with an offer. I'm cautious as to method of payment and what can be verified. He's offered 1/2 now and 1/2 when he comes to my city. He suggested to pay me via money order or Cashier's Check. I'm thinking of suggesting him wire transfer the funds from his bank to mine and if he is serious, the latter 1/2 should be in cash (US funds of course). Need other sailors thoughts. Anyone ever dealt with a prospective buyer who is not only another state, but north of the border?

No wire transfer

While this buyer does _not_ fit the typical scammer profile, I recommend against a wire transfer. You do not want to give your account information to an individual you don't know. I would have him send you a smaller deposit via PayPal, then pay for the balance (maybe 80-90% of the price) in cash.

verifying funds

The only thing, is that the eBay listing has ended, this guy saw my eBay listing and wants to buy privately, outside of eBay. His line of communication has been open and pretty steady, so I'm confident he's very very serious. Just wanting to protect myself on this. But the wire transfer comment is fully understandable there. Thanks for your feedback! mark

Just did this

I just sold a motorcycle to a guy from Calgary.Paypal was used for the $500 down payment. He then asked me how long he had to pick it up.Seeing as I had his money I told him at least a month.A month went by and He showed up when he said. I had to look at it from his side.He didn't know me and here I was taking his money. How did he know I even had what I said I did. There has to be some trust in the world. I men come on how would you feel if you drove the thousand miles to find out your deposit was for something that was a piece of junk,or the seller had skipped town?
