It was a hot boat in it's time and saw quite a bit of racing action. Later models had a premium interior, ie: lots of wood, mirrors on the bulkhead, etc. Very pretty boat, nice sheer and cabin top. Friend of mine crewed on one that did well on club races in SoCal. Other than that, just look for the typical stuff of boats of that vintage. You can assure yourself that, with a good bottom and decent sails, it will move out OK. Similar PHRF ratings to Catalina 36, Hunter 36, Cal 36. (144 in SFO) See the link to the association.

Great Solid Boat
I have been enjoying a '73 Islander 36 for about 4 years now. Rock Solid boat. we have old sails and do not do well in light wind in beer can racing but kick along well in 15 knot winds on puget sound. There are probably better cruisers due to the cockpit layout being set up for racing but I can still single hand up to about 20 knots. check out the Islander36.org folks mentioned above for every piece of information you could want, but they are biased. Still I love the boat and rate it as a good compromise (as all boats are). A poor racer by todays standards (we don't use rating rules just first over the line) and not the greatest cruiser but like I said rock solid, nothing breaks. Our total ownership costs including 230 month moorage for the past 4 years averages 450 per month inclduing haulouts every 2 years.
