A warning to all boat owners who are thinking about relocating their boats to Portsmouth, VA. The city council has proposed an increase in the boat property tax from .01 per hundred to $10 per hundred!! An increase of 1000%. The city council is having a preliminary meeting tomorrow evening at 7:pm and will go up for vote on 1 June. The city is poorly run, always the budget in the red, and one of the only ways to get some quick funds is to tax the boat owners. It is at mile marker zero for the intracoastal.

Didn't Hampton recently eliminate their

tax in order to increase the number of boaters in their waters? Seems like a see-saw down there. I agree, Portsmouth is not that desirable at those rates....

Hampton Did Eliminate theirs

I have quite a few friends in Portsmouth that keep their boats there...that will have a big impact on places like Norfolk and Hamptom that have the .01 per hundred....everyone will relocate from Portsmouth and leave many a vacant slips.
