removehtml]We're chartering a Beneteau 473 out of Tortola next week. I understand that the winds are pretty consistant between 17-25 mph this time of year. Does anyone know the approximate wind speed that we should put the first or second reef in the main for most comfortable sailing? Error: Error: expected [/URL], but found [/removehtml] instead[/removehtml]

18 apparent is usually

a good starting point. Also depends on point of sail. If you're going from Virgin Gorda to Jost van Dyke, use full sail, it's a run. Going from Soper's Hole to Norman Island, use full sail, it's a beam reach. If you're going from Roadtown to the Bitter End, reef, it's an uphill slog. Slog in the best meaning of the word, if I could slog in weather like that, I'd slog all day, everyday...:):):)

In-mast

Do you know if your boat has in-mast furling? If it does, you can reef at whatever your comfort level dictates.

when to reef

My rule is you reef when you first think about it. If you wait it may be to late. It is always easier the drop a reef out than to reef under pressure.

Reef early

We chartered a Catalina 42 several times in the BVI. Our thumb rule was 1st reef at 18kts or 18 degrees of heel. We often hit max hull speed(8.1kts) with less heel and reduced helm.

Reefing

I don't reef by the numbers i go by feel. If in doubt, put the reef in before you leave. It is a lot easier to shake it out underway than it is to put it in. underway.
