I have a leak where the solid rigging, port and starboard, is attached at the deck. There is a round metal plate there about 4 inches in diameter if I remember correctly. Should I loosen something to get caulking under this plate or just scrape off the old caulking around the plate and replace with new caulking?

The right way is to remove the plate, scrape away all old caulk, clean, and recaulk, but don't tighten down the plate until the caulk sets up completely.

Don't let the mast fall down!!!
DON'T FORGET The standing (solid) rigging is what is holding up the mast. If you take it off the mast stands a good chance of falling. If you are feeling lucky try listing the boat so the "high" side standing rigging is inplace while you recalk the "low" side chainplate (round metal plate). This will keep the "low" side rigging unloaded while you work on it. I do not have any real good way of listing the boat except to fill your dingy with water and try to hoist it with the mainsail halyard. Bill

Steve, just secure the main halyard to the rail
