Anybody know what the correct size PSS Shaft Seal is for a '87 Catalina 27? They say to measure the ouside diameter of the stern tube. You almost have to be a contortionist to get your body positioned properly in the lazarette to reach everything, so I'm concerned that I'll make an error measuring it. I crawled in there last week, and my lower back is only just now recovered enough to where I can walk again. :)

PSS Size

Lee, I'm in the process of installing a PSS on my 1973 Catalina 27. I got an email from Catalina customer support which confirmed that on my boat the stem tube is 1 5/8. You may want to double check with them about yours since it's an 87. Just go to www.catalinayachts.com, click on "contact", click on the first Customer Service from selection list then you can drop them an email. They got back to me the same day (during the week, don't know if they are there on weekends). I found the most affordable PSS at www.deepblueyachtsupply.com. I talked to Mike, their customer rep, and he said that I should buy the PSS that is just one size smaller than my stern tube since they only come in 1/4 inch increments. It's better to stretch 1/8 up, than try to clamp 1/4 down. One more very interesting site to check out is http://www.pbase.com/mainecruising/pss_shaft_seal which is from a contributor to this board I believe. Good luck with your installation! Jeff

Thanks

Most likely my stern tube is the same size, but I'll confirm that with Catalina before I order the shaft seal. I've still got a few other projects in line before I tackle this one. Let me know if you have any problems doing yours.
