Proper size line for reefing

I need to replace the reefing lines attached to the sails. What is the proper size line and what is a good length. The old ones are so torn-up that I can't use those as a guide.

Depends on size of boat and sail

What size boat do you have? I just bought a furler and it has some guidance for line size. For my 26' boat it recommends 1/4" line minimum, but 3/8" would probably feel better on the hands.-Brent

but fer crissakes don't make the mistake of using the small ties to do the reefing. First nail down both ends with 3.8-inch. Otherwise the mail will rip quietly and quickly.
