Proper size for canvass boom tent?

I am getting ready to have a boom tent made for my Catalina 25 (Pop Top). I plan to launch this boat this coming spring (my first sailboat). I do not have a pop top cover so thought this boom tent could do dual purpose (read cheapskate) by acting as a sun and rain shield... I realize this does not address any "bug issues" but probably won't spend many nights aboard...
My beam is 8 foot...
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I had a boom tent fabricated for a Westerly 24 that I owned several years ago and it covered the area from the mast to the single backstsay. It was made wide enough to attach to the shrouds with approx., 14 in. forming a valance on the sides. Aft it was supported by a PVC tube in a sleeve that attached to the backstay in the center and 2 cleats near the stern. I wish I had a picture cause the resulting appearance was much greater than the pieces involved. It evolved over several weeks regarding the points where it was secured and got more functional and better looking. In S. Louisiana where the boat was kept, it made a difference of at least 15 degrees in the cockpit and allowed me to sit dry in a driving rain. Cost was negligible. The canvas was essentially a rectangle and the key was placement of the grommets for attaching.

Good luck, Darrell

if you arent spending nights aboard, and are only daysailing, a boom tent is an expensive way to go (although it may be cheaper than a bimini)...
the hatch/companionway cover is a good thing when you are away from the boat.
we even use ours snapped to the sliding hatch when the top is up... as a sunshade for the cabin when the sun is behind us (our top opens up and rearward, as compared to some that open up and forward against the mast) as it hangs from the slider.

but if you are looking for a full cockpit enclosure when you are away from the boat, then that is a bit different. its kind of hard to rig a full cover so it can be used as a quick and easy boom tent, unless you have reefing gromments installed in it.

neither a boom tent or a cockpit enclosure can be used while sailing, but we have motored quite a few miles in rainy weather with our boom tent up and stayed dry.
its nice to sit out in the cockpit on a warm rainy day and not get wet or cold.... it seems to make the refreshments taste so much better:D

we constructed our boom tent so it would cover the entire area aft of the mast all the way to the taffrail. (it has a slot in it to fit around the topping lift) and so it would be a perfect fit when the boom was hoisted overhead on the topping lift, that gives unobstructed headroom in the cockpit when we want it the most, while we are on the hook or at the dock...

I have one for our Catalina 25 that runs from the mast to boom end. I put it over the bimini. I use it for shade and rain during stays on the boat at anchor or in a slip. It lays over the boom and clips to the life lines/stanchions. It was made by Bartlett sails in Austin Texas. I do not think it is a custom size. Sure is handy.

One important feature of the cover for my Westerly I neglected to mention . It was not attached to the boom in any fashion. This allowed the boom to be located to port or stbd. to allow more headroom in the cockpit, easier access to the companionway, and also allowed the cover to be rigged below the boom if I required more rain protection if absent from the boat.

While mine is a MacGregor, I have added four WM fishing rod holders to the cabin top and aft stantions. For now, I have PVC tubing made into an "I" shape whose four legs go into the rod holders. I can sail with this frame shape. Once I get it just right i'll have it made in stainless. FYI, I have end of boom sheeting; if you have mid boom, you can make it longer.
