PROPER PROP 1981 HUNTER 33...HELP??

I HAVE A 1981 HUNTER,33FT,AND FOUND A PROP THAT HAS "16RH 12 1/14"STAMPED ON IT.THERE IS A SLEEVE IN THE PROP THAT FITS AROUND THE SHAFT THAT SEEMS TO ALLOW THE PROP TO RIDE A BIT FORWARD, (I HAVE TO USE ABOUT 3-4 LARGE WASHERS TO BE ABLE TO TIGHTED THE PROP. ANY SUGGESTIONS OR RECCOMENDATIONS...THE YANMAR IS A G2,AND I BELIEVE @2500-2800 TOP RPMS.EMAIL ME AT NF22@YAHOO.COM

Prop

Sounds like your prop shaft hole is 1/4" too large and it has a reducer. If it were mine I would replace it with an OEM style prop.

I believe David is right. Your prop is stamped 16" right hand rotation pitched to 12 degrees for a 1 1/4" shaft. You have a reducer ring for your more than likely 1" shaft in order to make it fit.The stats on this Hunter site call for a 14" prop with 12 degree pitch on a 1" shaft assuming engine and shaft are original.But check with Hunter factory or a prop pro before making changes.

The 14 by 12 originally specified was sized for the original 2QM15 engine. That engine is supposed to be able to do 3000 RPM and, in good condition and with a boat that is not overloaded, will do so. Mine did for years, until the boat got progressively heavier, and the alternator a bit bigger. Plus, the engine may be getting a bit tired! It will now do about 2800 RPM, which, as I understand it, is close to indicating that it might be overloaded. If your engine is the same, I would say your prop is way too big. But if your engine is bigger, there are formulae to calculate the prop size.
