What is the best method to properly support a small sailboat in order to restore it? I have a ~20 ft unknown make/model sailboat that I recently acquired that has been discussed in another thread. It needs some serious TLC. It is currently on a trailer, sitting on the keel with side supports on each side of the hull. Will this damage the keel or hull to leave it this way? It has been this way for at least five years. Thanks in advance for any advice... -Jack

You Got It

Jack~ You have the best method to store your boat, for long term, on the trailer.

Dig a hole

Dig a hole in the ground and place it in there so the gunnel is about 1 foot above the surface of the ground. That will minimize the 2 million trips up and down the ladder.;D Of course, I'm kidding.

You might want to additionally brace the bow and stern....

FiberGlass and/or wood will eventually 'creep'/deform slightly over time. You want the boat to be supported 'equally', as if it were in the water. Equally supporting the 'ends' by bracing at the bow and stern will help prevent the boat from 'hogging': the bow and stern from 'drooping' slightly lower than the keel. Doesnt take much to support the bow and stern - just a few 2X4s, etc.

That sounds like good advice

Thanks for the tips. I'll try to rig something up to support the ends - good advice on that. As far as digging the hole - are you sure I just can't bury the whole thing???
