I've been doing this boat thing since I was a kid. At some point it became apparent that the things I'd been doing for so many years I could no longer do without injuring myself, sometimes seriously. After tearing the ligaments of the left bicep so badly that the muscle now resides at the shoulder, I saw the need to think before acting. Now, even the simplest tasks like picking up a mooring pennant, need to be thought through so I don't injure myself. It is an unfortunate fact that I am just no longer able to horse around a 70k pound boat. It isn't that I don't do things, it's that I understand my limits and do them with forethought.

The Admiral and I have been doing manual labor around our new place. Hammering, lifting, shoveling, moving rocks. Lots of moving rocks. "No, that's just not how I want it. A little left."

Anyway, I'm finding out that my 20 year old brain has a habit of overloading my 60 year old body. "I got it, baby. Stand back." "uh, nope, I don't got it." "help?"

Dammed near dropped a 100 pound stone on my foot when I let my brain do the talking. :soapbox:

wow i was never taught how to "correctly" pull line. we just pulled it well and as directed. under hand overhand as long as we didnt step into a loop of line or wrap aaround our hands or wrists, or in some other way befoul anything including selves. could well be we were taught allegedly correct way to haul a line by our merchant marine captain uncle but i think yotties hadnt invented correct or incorrect line handling yet. we learned before there were so many brand new yuppie yotties in the water.
all line hauling and handling requires attentiveness to the way you are using your muscle groups.
if you tear somthing it is less likely due to allegedly corrrect hand placement on a line than to improper body mechanics in your hauling.

I had to smile when I read that, I see a lot of myself in there!
However like in most sports over the the last several decades, doctors and sports physiologist have learned a lot about the proper technique in sailing, and it's application pays real dividends, not just in AC programs but with everyday guys and gals. For me at 53, its important because I continue on in several very active physical sports (ice hockey, ski racing, mountain biking) against guys decades younger than myself where good technique has been partly responsible for my ability to still play. Likewise I treat sailing as a sport and give it the same regard to its technique. But to each individual person, I say Overhand underhand; your body your choice. Just sail!

A man has to know his limits. Unfortunately, at sixty-four, my brain and body are so out of sync my limits are determined, in most part, by the ensuing aches, pains, stiffness, etc. Geesh, when did this happen?

We have this saying in our hockey league, related to the endless string of injuries you get when you play. It's based on your age.

Teens: That will be better tomorrow.
20s: That will be better for next weeks game.
30s: I wonder when that will get better.
40s: I wonder IF that will ever get better.
50s: That will never get better.

I'm not sure I want to know what is said about being in your 60s. Maybe: It only gets worse from here on. Or, I'm still as good as I once was, once. Luckily, I'm still in good enough shape to take on a rigorous sail.

I have tennis elbow from excessive use of a power drill & impact driver on my house projects. I think the torque is what affects it. Those exercises are helping! Thanks!
I've been fortunate never to have any serious aches and pains, even now in my 60's. I can't keep up with my kids anymore on skis, but I taught them to race when they were very young so they're better skiers now than I ever was, so that should be expected. They wait for me, out of respect ... but they only have to wait for me when we're on terrain that I shouldn't be skiing anyway at my age.

Got some turmeric from GNC, have been taking 1 pill a day over the weekend. I can't say there's been much of a change, but I guess it hasn't made me sick yet, so I'll keep on! :D

As for overhand pulling on lines, I think I've seen video on racing boats where the guy hoists the spin hand over hand, catching the halyard and kinda pulling it back and to the side. I guess I'm imagining that the pull in this method comes from the pinky side of the hand, as opposed to pointer finger side? I guess next time I get the Force 5 out, I'll have to play around and see if I can hold the mainsheet both ways, 'cos I'm not envisioning how I do it now...
