In taking apart a frozen bronze thru hull, my Niger Calder maintenance books call for some type of lubricating grease. Because of the teflon flanges around the interior ball, I think the grease cannot be petroleum based; vegetable oil or similar oil is the only lubriicant I can think of. Does anyone know of another grease or lubricant for the bronze thru hulls?

Teflon grease!

John: I think that teflon grease may be in order here. This would be the same stuff that would use on your head pump.

thru hull grease

The grease I use is water pump grease which can be bought at any auto store. I have used this grease on bronze and plastic thru hull ball type valves. I had a problem on my last boat ,it had bronze thru hull valves that were sezed open, I just used a heat gun and they released then I reseated them with seating compound and greased them with water pump grease, which is what the manufacture recomened.

Teflon seal with petro based grease!

Ken: I think that John's concern here is the teflon seal. I am not sure, but there may be some type of a reaction with the teflon and a petroleum grease product.
