I am new to this site. I hope this post finds everyone doing well. Thank you in advance for any info you can give me. I am extremely interested in sailing Spinnaker on my Catalina 27. I have never done any Spinnaker sailing in the past and would like to get involved. I am trying to educate myself on this subject and was wondering as to the proper dimensions that need to be used of a symmetrical spinnaker for a Cat 27. Also, what is your ideas on an asymmetrical spinnaker? Not having a bow sprit, I would have to come up with a handy modification. Have you heard of anyone attaching the asymmetrical spinnaker to an eyelet on the bow pulpit. I would imagine this would put too much pressure on the bow pulpit but wanted to check around. Thanks, Jace

No Sprit Needed

We used to run an Asym on our C27 - without a bow sprit. We attached a turning block at the forestay attach fitting on deck. We ran a tack line through this block along the toerail, to a cleat near the cockpit. We rigged a keeper (12" length of webstrap) around the forstay/luff foil, and attached the tackline to both the keeper and the tack of the sail. We had a snuffer sock that greatly enhanced our ability to launch and retrieve the sail - and because I was lazy, it also made it easy to gybe the sail - run the snuffer down, rerig the sheet and relauch on the other tack - no need to run two sheets and gybe the sail outside the forestay. The link below has some pretty good info on Asym setup and usage. Good Luck! Tim Brogan April IV C350 #68 (was Inamorata C27 #6111) Seattle

Bow Pulpit

Tim, Did you have a bow pulpit on your Cat 27? If so, this did not interfere with your setup at the base of the where the forestay is attached to the deck?

Pulpit, yes. Interferance, no.

Jace - yes we had the standard bow pulpit, and no, there wasn't any interferance. At least not any more than there was with a jib or jenoa. The tack of the jib/genoa attached to the deckfitting at the forestay - the turning block for the Asym tack attached very close to that. The tack line for the Asym allowed the tack of the sail to be positioned up and down wherever you wanted it (or wanted to trim it) - which might be above the pulpit level. The "keeper" kept the tack attached to the forestay. No interferance. Good Luck! Tim Brogan April IV C350 #68 (was Inamorata C27 #6111) Seattle
