Proper Battery Storage?

For discussion, what is the best way to store a 12v marine battery during the off season? Charged, uncharged, left on the charger? Can I leave it in the garage (colder) or the workshop in my house?I really never thought about it and was just wondering it there is a proper method.thanks,steve!

Battery Storage

The main issue for storage over the winter is keeping them fully charged. A fully charged marine battery in good condition (internally) shouldn't freeze unless you're in some extreme winter conditions. The manufacturer or dealer should be able to give you the lower safe temperature limit.The electrolyte in a fully charged battery is highly acidic, which is a good "anti-freeze". (Think of your car battery -- it only becomes a freeze-up problem when the charge level is very low.)My batteries are kept on the boat, which is stored on shore in Marblehead, MA. A few times during the season my shore power cable is connected to ensure the charge is "topped up". Just be careful it doesn't over-charge and cook off the electrolyte, exposing the cell surfaces to air.

Steve:Just had this going about 4-6 weeks ago. They are NOT suppose to freeze as long as you keep them charged to at least 75% of capacity. Leave them on the boat, put them on the floor, put them on a piece of wood. It does not make any difference as long as you "Keep Them Charged".

Battery storage

A cheap trickle charger from Walmart auto section with a timer set for about 1/2 hour per day will keep it up with no problems. Doesn't hurt to check the water level every 6 weeks or so.

In the garage, with a weekly charge.

With no electrical power at the boat, and only one battery, I take it home, and use a simple charger with a shut-off once a week.By the way, cement is _no_ problem.David
