I am in the midst of negotiating to purchase a 1988 Hunter Legend 37. The survey has been done and one of the findings is that the bracket for the propellor shaft has a slight twist in it. The Surveyor says it is bent and should be straightened (or replaced), The vendor/broker claim it is intentionally done this way to make the removal of the shaft easier in that the rudder does not need to be removed first. Although I agree with the surveyor that the twist is in need of repair, I have heard of this in other boats. I would truly appreciate any comments. Shaft Bracket = Strut?
1. For info, the 1988 Hunter 37 is a model 37 vice 35.5 so I corrected my post accordingly. 2. By "shaft bracket" do you mean "strut"? If so, the strut does not come from the factory with a bend in it. If the strut is bent so the cutlass is off-center then the shaft is not lined up parallel with the shaft log, the part that goes through the hull. There are boats with the propeller shaft skewed to the boat centerline but to my knowledge they are designed that way. I'd agree with your surveyor and would require a new strut vice re-bending it. Also, call Hunter - it doesn't cost anything and they have an 800 number. This way you get a factory opinion. I'm currious why the strut is bent. Did the boat hit something? Was it bent intentionally? The dealer said it was but I find this hard to believe. If it is rebent (which I wouldn't recommend) then the cutlass should be replaced too.
