I had a diver clean my boat bottom yesterday, and he told w that he couldn't see a safety pin on the prop.

Question: does the C30 have a hole in the shaft for a safety pin, or do C30s use a 2nd nut to lock the prop in place?

Thanks,

Bob

Typically you would have a jam nut, a king nut and a cotter pin. Less frequently you would have a castle nut and a cotter pin. In any event, without the cotter pin your prop is not secure.

Thanks; the diver couldn't see a hole so we're thinking there's a pin in there but it may be broken off...

There are occasions where the end of the shaft may have been cut off (as in a certain percentage of Max Prop installations) so it is possible there is no hole, although that's probably unlikely.

I talked to the previous owner; he doesn't remember if it had a cotter pin or not.,I bet it's just rusted off; I'm going to get the diver to take a second look...

Have him go in with a selection of pins to choose from, a hammer and something to drive the old pin out of the hole.

Mine has a slotted nut with a cotter pin. I installed a new prop and used a stainless steel cotter pin with a bronze shaft and prop. I re-pitched the prop after 2 seasons and the cotter pin broke when I tried bending it back. I am using a brass cotter pin this season. The nut rotation could be hiding the hole.
