Oday 302 Port Henry
Last summer i purchased an O'Day 302. I never liked the fact that I could hear the prop (2bl 14" 11Pitch) turning when the boat was sailing fast and if i lock the shaft it's like dropping the anchor. The drag is amazing. Was thinking of changing to a folding or feathering prop. They are crazy money and I do not want to choose the wrong one. Anyone got some advice? Folding or feathering? Is three blades worth the money. Was thinking the Martec folding 2blade was a cost effective option. Should i spring for max prop feathering 2blade? Do I need to go all out for the three bladed feathering? Please help! Internet bad,to meny choices.

My Kirie Elite 37 has a.....

two blade feathering propeller and I love it. When using the Yanmar 27HP, the feathering propeller provides excellent power forward and backward. I have no complaints to share. There may be a less expensive feathering propeller you may want to consider. I've attached the link for Kiwi Props. My sailing buddy ordered a three blade feathering propeller from them today. An option

If you have easy access to the shaft, you can mark it so that the prop blades are situated up and down, which will minimize drag, and lock it in reverse at the mark when sailing.

love that Martec

I bought a 1978 Cal 227 in 1989 and when sailing it offended my sense of what was right, dragging that huge barnical under the boat. One of the first purchases I made was a Martec 2 blade folder. I had a Atomic 4 and I didnt notice any loss of power in forward, you did need to enter the slip slowly and then rev the heck out of the engine to stop. I never had a problem with this in 16 years of sailing. I remember being very excited when I recieved the prop in the mail. It was winter in Annapolis and we had an exceptionaly low tide and the prop was exposed. I borrowed a friends waders and installed the prop while the boat was in the water. I didnt want miss any sailing time with my new prop. My boat really did sail faster compared to other boats I had been Racing against and it was quiet. I loved my Martec.

if you want the best bang for your buck...

...check out Flex-o-fold. It's the prop of choice on my last two boats, and I've never had a problem with either one.

I have a MaxProp

and love it, but it came with the boat. A fixed two-blade can be an option; when sailing turn the shaft, that you have marked, to line the blades up behind the keel and put the trans in reverse to lock it.

Kiwi

Check out the Kiwi Props from New Zealand - very reasonably priced. I've had one on my Hunter 38 for a year now and no regrets. It looks funny but I'll never have another boat without one.

Folding vs Feathering

One thing to bear in mind is the performance in reverse - folding will be worse than a fixed prop, while a feathering prop will be better than a fixed prop. This is because on a feathering prop in reverse(at least on a max prop) the blades rotate all the way around so they are working with the same leading edge as they do going forward. Hard to understand until you either look at the animation on the maxprop website or spend some time spinning a maxprop out of the water. Pretty cool design.
