propeller Shaft Seal

I have a small leak around the propeller shaft. It appears to be coming from the rubber packing box shaft seal made by Volvo Penta. I'm told I need to repack grease to stop the leak. Does anyone know how this is done? The boat is a Beneteau 361 and is in the water.

lube

There is a lot of discussion regarding lubing the shaft seal in the beneteau list at sailnet.com. Select email at the home page and then go to archives.

Possible solution to leak

Stan, I had water in the same place and dried it up only to have it come back. At the time I could not find the leak and assumed that it was from the HVAC sump pump. I re-sealed that and still found a leak tracking it to the backstay and the water would work its way through and settle at the shaft, once sealed the leak stopped...

Thanks

Kevin, Thanks, that's a thought as I just assumed it was form the rubber packing box which is supposed to be 'burped' periodicaly and repacked every 200 hours. I just can't figure out how to repack the grease. I do know it has something to do with the orange plastic cup like device that was left at the seal.

Volvo Shaft Seal

The orange plastic ring is for instalation only. There is a special tube of grease that comes with it from volvo. The tube has a very small pointed end that will slip between the shaft and the seal allowing the grease to be put in. Have had one of these on my First 310 for 12 years. Have replaced it many times.

I'll try it

The grease must be in my parts kit. I'll give it a try next week when I'm on the boat. Thanks for the help
