Propeller shaft noise when sailing

When sailing, there is a low growling sound caused by the shaft being turned by the water turning the propeller. I have a drip less connection, so does the shaft turning create unneccessary bearing ware? I experimented by putting the transmission in forward, but the growling continued. In reverse, the growling stopped, but this would add to drag. What brought this to my attention was noticing the change in sound as boat speed changed. I had noticed this in my last boat also. Is this an issue of concern or the product of an idle mind?

im pretty sure thats just an idle mind thing, i cant imagine it causing any problems, every boat that has an inboard without a folding prop does the same, its not under load so i wouldnt worry about it.

Most of the info I have read regarding transmissions strongly encourage that the transmission not be in forward while sailing. Neutral is preferred although reverse is acceptable.

Mark dont go there. This post has probably been covered about a 150 times. The shifter position while sailing! Now his symptoms... that is the thread.

Could be anything, cutlass bearing, motor mounts, engine balance, bent prop or shaft. Or as mentioned, just the increased hearing that we all have at sea. Specially at nite!
