Best propeller for O'Day 37

Hello! Those with a 37 O'Day, what propeller, size, pitch, rotation have you? Folding propeller, 2/3 blade or regular propeller 2/3 blade. Thanks Régis

Re: Best propeller for O'Day 37

Mine is a Kiwi Prop: RH, 3 blades 16.5", pitch 21 degrees, 1 1/4" shaft, boss for the shaft 1.25", taper ratio 1:16. I have the original 2 blade but I don't know the numbers. I have tweeked the blade pitch so I'm not sure if it's still 21 degrees. Richard

Thank you for your answer! I have heard only good things about the Kiwi Prop. Your boat is it as good performance of reverse That advence. The vibrations are they null. I currently a regular propeller 3 blades. My boat is very slow to start and really inefficient of reverse. I take note of your recommendation thank you again! Sorry if my English is bad I speak French. Régis

Without knowing what particular engine a particular boat has, what prop someones boat is twirling is completely meaningless.

I was looking for the article Main Sail wrote up on prop selection, and am unable to find it. If anyone has a link this would be a good place to post it. In any case it is advisable to do some research and educate yourself on propellers in general, and proper propeller selection in particular.

My question is very pertinante and consistent. All O'Day 37 have substantially the same engine so the propeller is perfect for one will be for another. Our engines are generally Yanmar 3GM30 or similar. If I ask is because my propeller is not effective. It is by comparing it improves!

We recently re-powered with a beta marine 30hp and re-pitched a 3 blade propeller to 16x12 - easily getting 6-7kts under power and were easily doing 7.5kts+ in 15-20kts of wind under 135% genoa alone - dragging the prop fixed.

Just advising you specify the engine anyone else is running, it can make a HUGE difference.

I would run a fixed pitch non feathering. Less crap to go wrong. Then you could put a pulley on the prop shaft behind the engine and run an alternator off it under sail.

Is it possible that you have marine growth on your propelleur at this time of year? No?
If your boat is in salty or even brachish water it can get barnacle growth and they seem to like the propeller. It does not take a large build up of barnacle shells to disrupt the intended motion of the propeller.

Thank you CCarmody, but what is the rear (backwards) speed performance with this 3 blade propeller to 16x12? Fast or slow acceleration! My wind turbine and my solar panel give me enough energy so I did not need an extra alternator on the shaft. I prefer block the propeller under sail as recommended by some manufacturer's engine. Thanks

I come back the boat, my propeller is 3 blades 15" X 15 pitch RH .
CalebD my propeller is very clean. My sailboat is freshwater is now.
I'm just not the good propeller or the good pitch.

I have not measured the maximum speed in reverse but stopping very quickly and backing into the slip is no problem - there is some prop-walk at low rpm's but very usable. I put the transmission in reverse to prevent the prop spinning under sail per transmission manufacturers instruction. The beta marine guys recommended a 17x11 3 blade as first with the 16x12 as 2nd choice - my prop before the engine replacement was a 16x11 so I just had it re-pitched to 16x12 and am happy with that vs buying another prop. Also with the 16x12 prop it leaves exactly 15% clearance to the hull so that's ok too-
