OK, I'm not nuts, but something is driving me nuts! I took my prop off yesterday (The weather is finally starting to warm up) to check the shaft key. I showed it to both the yard manager, as well as, the asst yard manager. I asked about putting the two nuts back on and they had different opinions. There are two nuts - a narrow one and a wide one. Which one goes on first against the prop hub? One is called the locking nut while the other is called the prop nut. Which is which? Then, of course, is the cotter pin that goes on the end of the shaft. They are trying to look it up in their manuals, but are not seeing a picture of it. Any links or pics? Thanks. P.S. I took off the narrow nut first and then the wide nut. But the yard had taken it off and replaced it for me two year's ago. So, I can't count on it having been correct.

My vote is

put the large nut on first and then the small one to secure it. Then comes the new cotter pin. After may recent propeller experience, I would replace the key as well as the cotter pin.

I did today

I was cleaning my prop today and its never been removed yet. The narrow nut next to the prop than the wider nut next and the cotter pin on the end keeping both nuts from coming off. I have a 2001 2GM20F with a two blade prop by martec X pitch 15 X 12 RH bore 1". nick

Reply from my Marina

I got a reply from my marina today. The Asst Yard Manager spoke to "Jim" at H&H Propeller in Middletown, RI. They do all the prop work for my marina. Jim informed Dave that the narrow nut goes against the prop hub, followed by the wide nut, followed by the cotter pin. He also informed Dave that that was the ABYC standard.
