I am looking for a company in the Annapolis or Northern VA area that can install the propane tank saftey device. My tank is fine and I don't want to replace it if I don't have to. Tony

Tony, are you talking about the tank overfill protection valve?

If so, it is now required by law and the old type tanks are no longer legal to refill. Most Propane dealers won't fill them. The old style valves have a round handwheel. The new valve have a more three sided handwheel and are supplied with all new tanks, but they can be backfitted into the old bottles. What you have to look for is the manufacturing date on your old tank. If the tank is steel or aluminum the life certification is 10 or 12 years (it will tell you on the tank). If it is near the end of its life, the certification will run out and the dealers aren't supposed to fill them either, (though some do). When that happens it's not going to matter how good the tank looks, and you will have to replace it. If your tank is fairly new and the refit isn't too expensive go for it. If not, Replace it. I had the old style steel tanks in Mexico and had no problem getting them filled there, but had to change them when I got back up here. I was going to upgrade to aluminum until I got sticker shock so I ended up getting new fiberglass tanks and they are great. They cost less than Aluminum, are much lighter, Have a 15 year life, and are transparent enough that you can see the propane level.

Tony are you talking about a celenoid for your line?

or are you talking about a propane gas detector in th ebildge? Or are you talking about a sealed tank container with an overboard vent line?

Safety Device?

We had on our Catalina 30 a remote shut-off that was located in the galley and shut off the tank in the lazarette. We also had a gas detector that would also shut off the tank if gas was detected. Both of these were purchased at West Marine.

Tony seems to have left the ship.

I still have no idea what he is looking for that he calls a tank safety devise and all the guessing in the world isn't going to find an answer.

I am looking for tank overfill protection valve?

Sorry about the confusion. I am trying to find a place that will install a Overfill Protection Valve on my tank. I have one of the old style tanks. After reading what Joe wrote it sounds like I may now have to replace the whole tank since my boat is a 94 Catalina and that makes the tank about 14 years old. Thanks for all help. Tony

Tony, Home Depot in Bel Air, Maryland has an unattended

tank exchange set-up. I happened to be there when a technician was picking up the empties and restocking the bins with full tanks. I asked him what was done with the old tanks and was told that they are scraped. Unless you have a special tank, just exchange your tank for a new one with the proper valve. If you just have a steel tank exchanging it is the best way to go. I still have two or three that are full but as I empty them I shall exchange them for modern tanks.
