I have an original (1999) aluminum 9.6# aluminum propane tank in great condition. I know the cert is out of date and it needs an updated fill valve. I am in CT and have been unable to locate someone to recertify the tank. Any suggestions?

I had my tanks certified at a Propane dealer. It was a simple phone call. An appointment was made.
I dropped the tanks off and came back the next day, picked up and paid.
2 tanks, one replaced valve, certification stamped... $65

There is a local propane and welding supply in my town that re-certs for about $15-20. It's not a pressure test, just a visual. Good for 5 more years. If your tank doesn't have the latest OPD valve, that will require changing. I'm guessing another $25-30 for the valve.

Seems that a visual test is worthless, other than allowing you to refill. Doesn’t really assure that the tank is safe to use without removing the valve and inspecting inside as well as pressure testing.

CFR requires a visual inspection prior to any fill. A visual “test “ can be in place of a actual hydro test and that meets the hydro requirement for 5 years. This visual test involves removing the valve and inspecting the inside (and outside). Rust and failed OPDs are the main issue with lPG tanks. The actual hydro involves fill the tank to test pressure and is good for 10 years.both types of tests require visual inspection prior to fill regardless.
