I am ready to convert from alcohol to propane. Is the aft lazerette locker a good choice for installing the propane bottles? How did you vent overboard? Where did you install yours? I have seen some mounted on the stern rail (not pretty) but I am sure they are safe. What was the approximate cost? Any ideas?

propane tank location

I converted mine... You must have a sealed locker for the propane tanks that is vented ouside...I would not trust any location that I "sealed up"..... after investigating different methods I would either go with a professional built locker like the kind that West Marine sells (about $500.) and have a professional install it... I decided to go the easy route and I installed an aluminum tank to the stern rail with a switch mounted near the stove that operates an electric shut off valve and sniffer in the bilge..

Seward Tank & Locker

West Marine sells a nice little tank/locker combination made by Seward for about $200. It fits nicely in the stern lazerette of the C-30 and vents through the transome. I installed one on mine.

Just a note to remind everyone planning to install a propane locker that the ABYC standards require that the locker vent be at least 2 feet away from the exhaust outlet. Compliance with the standard will save you money in an insurance squabble.
