i just posted yesterday a view of the propane tank installation on a 37 c i recently purchased i would very much like the opinion of others as to what they think about this installation, it is out of the way, but i would like opinions as to its safety the tank as you see is horizontaly monted with a protective cover and a stainless steel guard rail forward of the mast just aft of the dorade boxes while the dorade boxes have a distribution panel made of pvc and valves which then connect to marine quality propane hoses to go below decks there is a pressure gauge on the tank, there is a solenoid in the distribution piping as well as several cut-off valvesm and there is an operable sniffer as well as blower below i am paranoid enough about propane to replace the pvc with flexible marine quality propane hoses and brass ball valves, and to never depend on the solenoid to shut it off, always burning gas out of the piping what is your opinion of the safety of this install??? how close could the deck exhaust for a bulkhead stove be???? is there danger with the proximity of the dorades and the distribution piping and the propane tank would you install a blower also??? ps the tank is built for horizontal installation please reply to sailorhayes@hotmail.com

Your propane installation.

What I noticed is that it sits right over your staysail traveler base. And the traveler has been removed. Is the boat a sloop or do you use the staysail without a boom? The box with the valves and the stainless bar are standard on your boat. The box was used to store winch handles and the bar protected the dorades from the staysail boom. I cannot comment on the safety of your propane. I have stayed with non-pressurized alcohol just because of the questions that you raise.

Hey Jim it looks pretty funky

I'd rip it out and forget the propane heater. Hang the tank off of outboard starboard stern rail and run one continuous hose thru top of stern thru starboard locker to galley stove. In the meantime, to check for leaks turn on all valves, solenoid and tank valve. Get a reading on the pressure gauge and then close tank valve. Pressure should hold in the piping for at least a minute. If pressure drops to zero (see gauge) w/in a minute, you got a leak.
