Propane System Leak in 2005 Beneteau Oceanis 323

I have a leak in my propane system - either the hose or the fittings between the tank and the regulator. The hose fittings are non-standard, so I cannot just replace the hose - I may have to replace the regulator and hose together. The Beneteau site lists these part numbers as obsolete. Has anyone replace their hose or regulator and provide guidance as to the best path forward?

Hi @Laura K and welcome to the site.

You will have to post a few close up pictures before we can offer any help in repairing your leak.

In addition, you can locate the leak by making up a mixture of a cup of water and a half teaspoon of liquid dishwashing detergent. Pour the mix into a spray bottle and spray the fittings and hoses around the suspected leak (or apply with a paint brush). Try not to soak the regulator or solenoid valve to avoid corrosion. The leak will show as bubbles and you can go from there.

I do not know what your experience in dealing with propane is, but please be aware that making a mistake with propane on a boat is the most dangerous mistake you can possibly make.

The statement "non standard" is definitely cause for concern here. That's why a few photos are required.

A proper gas fitting has been mechanically crimped on to the hose. The usual barbed hose fitting and clamp are not permitted under the fire code, ABYC, and other standards organizations.

The only safe solution to a propane leak it to replace the entire system from the tank to the stove, including the sensors and controls. Depending on how old your boat is, the new systems are vastly safer and prevent catastrophic leaks.

If you do not have experience working with explosive gas that is heavier than air, then you might want to hire a professional with experience in marine propane systems. There should be several around the Kent Island/Annapolis/Baltimore area.

What’s the suggested age for replacing hoses, etc?
Good question. The day before they start leaking?

I don't know. I replaced mine when they were about 25 years old. The new designs are much safer, every joint will close if there is a sudden drop in pressure which would happen if the valve was open and the hose cut or something was disconnected with the valve open. There are pigtails don't require wrenches to connect to tanks now, just like the ones on the gas grill at home.
