* On-demand propane units are spark ignition with flame sensor, not pilot.

* CNG woulds still still pump a lot of gas in the boat if it missfired. The firing rate of an on-demand heater is MUCH higher than any other appliance; it heats 4 gallons of water from ~ 65F to 110F every minute, which would take your stove MUCH longer.

* Boats powered by outboards (even some cats up to 40 feet) cannot generate hot water from the engine. We charge batterys via solar.

Mainsail's right; I've seen a few scary installations. These are MUCH higher power than a stove or cabin heater and demand proportionate respect.

A 40' boat is a serious piece of equipment for sure. Sounds like you have her set up nice.

I think the solar showers mentioned already would qualify as a "thermal collector" so I think your idea is sound. My father has a solar water heater in the attic of his house ... it works well for him...but he also lives in Hawaii.... so ....???
