We've recently aquired a 1981 H33 (to replace our beloved '81 Watkins 27) and are planning several upgrades. We want to replace the alcohol stove it came with (not the original) with a propane stove/oven. Stumping me now is the best location for a propane locker. What have other H33 owners come up with for a solution? All input greatly appreciated. Dale & Cindy Baker 1981 H33 "Weyrling" Sailing the Sound from Sub Base New London, Groton CT

How about an outside locker?

We have one mounted on the starboard stern rail that holds two 6# aluminum tanks. The vent is below and outboard the transom, so vapors will not migrate into the cockpit or into a lazarette and then into the cabin. It also has a solenoid cut-off valve with its sensor in the bilge. (However, we always shut the supply tank valve off before we shut off the stove.) ~ Happy sails to you ~ _/) ~

Outside Propane Locker

Ed: Thanks, a stern rail mounted tank is another option I plan on investigating. But I've got so much stuff back there already. It's my back up plan. Dale E. Baker '81 H33 "Weyrling" Sailing the Sound from SubaseNLon / Groton CT

There are lazarette lockers too.

Ours was already on when we bought the boat. Personally, I would have installed a lazarette locker. Depending on the room available, that might be your best option. ~ Happy sails to you ~ _/) ~

Hey Dale, first of all, you have a

great boat to build upon. Each and every thing you do should be the most important thing you do to that boat. I mean, try not to take away from her seaworthyness or looks. I spend way too much time now each time I do something to my H33 cause over the 21 years I've had her, I've done many things I wish I hadn't and later had to undo and redo. So, think twice or three times and cut or drill once. Sorry, preacher's kid here. Anyway, I have Kerosene stove and heater. I thought about the propane system a couple of years ago when doing some work on my heater, but chickened out for the same reasons of where to put the tanks, what about safty and the expense seemed to have many layers not immediately apparent from the beginning. Long runs of hose, switches, detectors, etc, etc. My thoughts.. on this one, you can NOT cut corners. Safty First. Locker space it valueable on the 33, putting in a locker below decks seems very dangerous and very complicated. I think I would go for the sternrail mounted idea just for safty. Its a small rail area and that too is one of the reasons I stayed with Kerosene. Please keep up with your expenses from the get-go.. and inform us other 33 owners.. we might just want to follow your foot steps. Post some pics too! good luck, enjoy your 33, she's a great boat.

Fender Cage on stern rail

If you look around you can find fender cages/holders that will fit a 10 pound bottle. This can be hung on the stern rail. Don't overlook the new 6 pound bottles. You may be able to find room for 2 of these easier than 1 ten-pounder.
