I'm purchasing a Beneteau 411 which comes with a single 10# propane cylinder. The compartment has room for a spare. Where can you buy these tanks. West Marine has them for $95, but that seems a bit much! Thanks
Pete

That is about what these specialized bottles cost. Welcome to boating Pete!

If you found a marine 10lb propane cylinder for $95, buy it. The aluminum one we bought at WM was like $200. Like others have posted, steel cans will rust like crazy.

I just replaced my aluminum tank due to a leaky seal with a fiberglass tank like the one's referenced. Bought mine on line from an RV dealer for $80 something. Viewed a video that demonstrated their safety which sold me. The ability to see how much propane remains in the tank is a big plus.

My dockmate bought an extra tank, I asked him the same question. He thought a second tank was a waste of space, it can take a while to use a full tank if your just using it for the stove.

Our 411 has sat idle for 3 years at the dock. When we went to use the stove, no gas. We took it to get filled and they told us it was full! Turns out that something inside the valve is stuck closed. He said you have two choices: 1) pay $50 to get a new valve or 2) rap it with a hammer and hope it frees itself. We tried the latter and it worked like a charm. The only reason I bring this up is that it's another reason for a spare tank.

Pete, Was looking for a backup so I was researching this recently. My B331 has one tank and storage for two. The OEM tank is 10# aluminum made by Worthington. You can find 4.25# steel replacement Worthington tanks at LOWES ($50), but if you want aluminum they are quite a bit more expensive (10# for $160). Trailer supply store might have them.

Hey Pete,
My mama once told me to never date or drink anything cheap that you could see through....:naughty:

In the case propane tanks...guess I can make an exception.........:)

Yes, I have one and it fits just fine in the 10lb locker slot. Buy new, the early runs had a recall.

That's the model I just purchased this past summer. I had a bad O Ring in my aluminum tank and couldn't find anyone to repair it. Seems as thought nobody wants the liability. You can google some of the fiberglass manufacturers site and watch a video on the safety of thier tanks. (sorry I can't find the link) Once I did I was sold and bought mine.

Keep looking Mike, I just got a pair of 38 y.o. Worthington aluminum tanks rebuilt by my local propane distributor. They replaced the original valve assembly with the new float-valve system. Very affordable.

For backup I bought the $25 adaptor to connect the small cans to the gas line. I also use the little cans on the BBQ.

Last May 4 of us spent 16 days on my B323. One guy was sure we's run out of gas and offered to buy me a second tank. I assured him the 10 pounds would last us. It did, and all the way to September. I should have let him buy me the tank, because he later broke the windlass:evil:

Gunni, I called distributors in Baltimore, Annapolis and near home above Philly without any luck. I finally gave up and bought one of the new glass style tanks for $85.

propane tanks

Hi Mike;
A local Southern States propane shop did my aluminum tanks with the new OPD valves for $30 each. As an old scuba diver and having 35 y.o. tanks I asked about recertification. I was thinking hydrostatic pressure testing. The shop foreman did the change out with a visual inspection, and noted that these tanks don't see more than a few hundred lbs of pressure. Don't know if that is kosher, but then I'm not putting them aboard. For that, I did as you did - purchased the 10lb. glass tank from Franklin, TN.

Re: propane tanks

Gunni, thanks for the info. I kept the tank and have it at home not wanting to get rid of it just yet. While one does just fine for now I'll likely want another when we start cruising in a couple of years. If I can find a shop to change the valve then I'll do that and put it back on the boat. Might even get a dedicated hose for the propane grill.

Composite Cylinder

I'm using a comet propane cylinder which has a steel interior, than fiber over it and a nice strong plastic jacket outside. I tried to find the best solution for me and this was the one. This model has a bigger diameter than the aluminum cylinder but a lot better looking and handles than any other cylinder I saw. Weights the same. Fills 11lb.
My locker can have this bigger diameter, around 12" I guess. It's also non-corrosive and has a level indicator on the valve. Check at cometpropane.com but buy over Amazon (it's probably cheaper).
