Propane regs

Hi Bob - You do need to have a lid that completely seals the propane locker when closed and have a vent that exits the boat at the bottom. Propane is heavier than air and will sink to the bottom if there is a leak somewhere. You'll need a regulator and solenoid which actively stays open when in use (via a switch in the cabin). That way if batteries run down the solenoid will close. You'll either need to alter the locker you bought, design you own, or buy another smaller one that fits. Or, you could simply attach the propane bottle(s) to the stern pulpit (not as nice, but certainly an easier installation). Perhaps some other C30 owners will offer advice on good places to install a propane locker. Best, Trevor

Installing the propane tanks

Been going through the same thing myself. What I have to do is build a support shelf in the starboard lazarette and mount the propane locker securely to it. And yes, the top is absolutely mandatory. If you install the items mentioned in the previous reply, you will have a legal installation. If not, your insurance will not pay out if your boat is destroyed by a propane fire or explosion. Nor will it pay out for any boats that may be damaged by your boat from said fire or explosion.

What model C30?

Is your boat a Mark I, Mark II, or Mark III? In other words, the cockpit design was a bit different through the years. I have a propane locker built into a Mark I (1982), and Mark II's have them in the aft lazarette. My Mark I propane locker is in the port cockpit locker, between the lid and the bulkead on the aft side of the cockpit locker. Tank access through a separate 10" round hatch just aft of the locker lid. The propane tank I have is 9" in diameter and just fits the hatch. The locker and lid are for sale at Sure Marine in Seattle; it's not a West Marine-type. The locker is vented through a thru-hull near the exit of one of the cockpit scuppers.

ppropaine tank in starboard lazerete

thanks for the information my only question is where did you run your thru hull vent tube for the locker?

Locker vent

The locker vent is mounted above the port cockpit scupper. You want the vent hose to maintain a downward slope away from the propane locker. It's possible to that location.
