Could you tell me what type of prop that I can put on a 2000 36ft Catalina I like to cruise more then race. The engine is 35hp. I got the boat from TX and in shipping the boat to Little Suamico Wi the prop got stolden. This spring is the first time that I will have the boat in the water. Can you help me out so I can buy the best prop for my boat? Saildreamer45@aol.com

Autostream

We use a 16 inch feathering three blade made by autostream in Austrailia. The prop is sold in the U.S. by Martec but we got a better price by ordering through BOAT US special orders. We had to pitch ours 3 half turns lower than Martec set it which caused us to have to haul the boat again. With the pitch set for 3000 RPM at full throttle, we get 7 knots at 2500 RPM. I believe we could enter our slip at 5 knots and stop before we hit the end.

I agree, Autostream. But

the pitch is externally adjustable WITHOUT hauling the boat. Now perhaps it was easier for Jack to haul rather than dive and make the adjustment. BTW, the pitch is adjustable for forward and reverse separately. Also you can grease the prop annually in the water and change the zinc, all w/o hauling. I have had one on my Hunter 40.5 with a 50hp Volvo for 2 years. Great difference from the original 2-blade prop. The setting on mine from Martec was right on the money. Also, about $1000 less than the Maxiprop. The constuction is all stainless steel, a perfect match for the shaft material electrolis-wise. Rich

Hey, Rich... about that Autostream...

..I was planning to put one on my (Yanmar) 40.5 but a service guy said they had some vibration problems. Subsequently, I have talked to several people who reported none. What was your experience? Did you go for a two or three blade. If three why? Thanks, Rick D. (Attitude Adjustment2)

BRRRRRRRRRR

Diving would be hard enough but the water temperature was 40 degrees when we launched. Working with a tool in each hand while applying torque and treading water is probably too much like walking and chewing gum for this old sailor to accomplish.

Rick D. (Attitude Adjustment 2)

Rick, I have had no vibration at all. In fact it is much smoother than the original 2-blade prop. I went with the 3-blade, 18" set to 12" pitch by Martec. I am not sure if the reverse pitch is set the same as the fwd, but it powers foward through chop great and the reverse stopping power is strong. You can search this Hunter Owners Site for "Autostream" and you will find several articles that I have written regarding performance. Also there is a detailed photo essay on the installation in the Photo Forum.

Autostream Too H40.5

After reading about Rich's prop I put one on a H40.5 with the 50HP Volvo 1 year ago and made 2 trips with it, one 1000 nm and one 2100 nm plus lots of Chesapeake cruising and the prop has been great. Very smooth and ALL the other benefits of a feathering prop. It was $1450 but maybe BoatUS would be less.

I have a '99 Cat 36 MKII

and I have the Autoprop....Yes a bit pricey but the absolute best when it comes to most efficient motoring prop out there. (forward and reverse) It's biggest attribute is that it is self adjusting. I think the only one on the market. The beauty of that is obvious (no adjustment EVER necessary) and it will always adjust the pitch to the motoring or motorsailing condition......you could be motorsailing at a very low rpm (1000 rpms) and still increase boat speed by a couple of knots.(yes pretty amazing) AND it is not hurting the engine , because it is adjusting the pitch to keep the proper load on the engine.......... If you are a pure racer, the other folding/feathering props will have a bit less drag though. So if you care about a few seconds on the race course.......
