prop wash on rudder

just launched a reborn 25' c/b with the mighty ZEPHER inboard. couldn't beleive the control while under power, not to mention the terrrificbalance at sail and on and on!!! I did notice a potential problem which jogged the memory chips in my on board computer(just under the ball cap) I have read about rudder shearing I think on this site. My theory is if with anything other than low throttle, if the rudder is over for sharp turn(near 90 deg.) or by un attended tiller. The thrust wash from the prop could definately cause un do stress on the lower pindle from leverage at lower area exposed to the prop turbulence. this turbulence is concentrated and certainly in few ways is chacteristic to the typical thrust/turbulence created by the same action when at sail on the rudder. I will avoid sharp turns when under power (click into neutral) then power back up when sharp turn is complete

Not to Worry

Rudders are designed to handle forces likely under sail with some consideration for grounding. Sailing forces will be a lot more than your prop will produce. For peace of mind - suggest you progressively try putting the rudder hard over under full power. This will expand your knowledge of the working limits of your O Day 25 and be useful when the forces of nature must be dealt with.

Zephyr Drive

Cee-Bee, I too have a 25 with the saildrive. It offers excellent power and control and is much less hassle than and outboard. It also gives the boat a much cleaner appearance without the outboard hanging off the back. Folks are amazed that my boat has an inboard engine, since few 25 footers do. My only conplaint is the turbulence coming off the prop when under sail. Locking the drive in reverse keeps the prop from spinning and helps some, but it is still annoying. I am looking for a used folding prop, but no success so far. Overall, I love the boat and the drive.

Zephyr Drive Model 15S10S

I have the same set up on my O'Day 25. I love the saildrive engine, great control & power. The only draw back is the age... it is hard to locate some of the parts, let alone someone that is willing to work on them. I have remedied that problem... I found a source for the service and parts manuals for these engines. As for the rudder, you should have no problems with stress on it with the saildrive running. Mine has shown no increase in stress or strain while running the engine compaired to under sail. Good sailing.

turns on a dime,

Yessiree Greg, same motor, how about replacement intake screen(s)? can you locate them, I am thinking about finding a lower unit to rebuild so as to have iT done before I would have any problems and just change it out and start a rebuild on the existing one. the power head is fairly common Johnson 30hp so I've been told, regarding parts. I do have a good question though for you or for Tim, who also responded to the prop wash item. I have a alternator (belt drive) on top of mine, do you? I did not think the ignition system needed this while running, I would like to save engine wear when not needing to charge the battery, buy popping off or on the belt as needed. What do you think?

Zephyr alternator

The alternator that you are refering to is option on that motor. It is a 35Amp alternator for added electrical load. I have two Zephyr saildrives, one in the boat and one in my garage. I plan on rebuilding the spare I have at home to switch out with the one in the boat. My spare one has the alternator on it. It seems like it would not hurt to take the drive belt off and only install it when you need the extra electrical power. According to the service manual there is a 3.5Amp signal that is generatored (internal to the motor) for the ignition system operation, and it is suppose to keep the battery charged... but I have not had any luck with that. I have been looking over the manual and it has a lot of good information in it, if you are interested in the mechanics of the motor and the lower drive unit. If you are interested in the source for the manual let me know.

Manual Info

Cee-Bee when I bought the boat the previous he included the extra motor. As for the information for the manual it is available from the ken cook company. (www.kencook.com) They also have a phone number on the web page you can call to order. Good Luck.
