Has anyboby else with a Hunter 426, 44, 426DS or 44DS had a problem with the boat pulling to port as speed increases. If so what was the fix. If I cruise at 3000RPM and you let the helm go the boat will turn radidly to port. This is scary at speed. If not carful the wheel can be pulled from your hand. The boat also seems to take forever to respond to reverse thrust. Any help is appreciated.

More info Please

What type of prop do you have? Fixed, folding, feathering? 2 or 3 blade? Does it happen all the time? Or is it possiible that wind and tide are involved? Russell

Cookie, every boat has this condition

to some extent no matter the type of prop. I use the wheel brake when motoring above 2-3 knots and use the autopilot whenever possible when motoring at speed. My wheel,( actually the prop pushing the stern to starboard) wants to turn to port in a big way under power. If anyone can motor with a balanced helm it would be a great feat.

morte info

the prop is a fixed 3 blade 18x12 stock prop that came with the boat. This only happens motoring. The wind or waves do not affect it. The wheel under sail is neutral and very light. Under power there is obvisously a heavy wheel.

Pretty Typical, I'd Say...

.. My Vision 32 would crank over quicker and harder than my 40.5, but it too will only go a short distance before going to lock on the steering under power, and the harder the throttle, the larger the torque. I had an O'Day 27 that wasn't too bad but also a Columbia 28 that would take your knees off with the tiller arm if you let loose under power. I was out on a Catalina 36 and noticed it had big helm under power too. So, I guess they all do to some extent and the key is how bad it manifests itself. That was a big help, Huh? Rick D.
