I have been sailing my 1983 H34 for only a month now and I have noticed that at hull speed while sailing my prop turns with the tranny in neutral. This is a little anoying but more importantly am I causing unnesessary wear on the transmission ? On my 25.5 I just put it in gear to stop the prop. Is this ok for the 3 GM 30 ? Thanks

Put it in reverse.

Travis: This has been discussed for several years on this site. If you check the archives you will see that the concensus was to put it in reverse. You may also find that it is difficult to get it out of reverse while undersail. If this is the case, you may need to start the boat in gear.

Travis, you are correct that this causes transmission wear in neutral and in forward. Yanmar states that the transmission should be put in reverse while sailing.

You will be long dead

I agree that Yanmar states it should be in reverse, but you will be long dead when you wear out the transmission from leaving it out of gear. If it bothers you put it in reverse if it doesn't then sail on.
