Hello all.
I started the engine to prepare to sail today. After placing the transmission in gear I noticed a strong shutter. I was hoping for some growth to be dislodged, however that was not to be. After running for a short time in forward and reverse, still no change. I donned my wet suit went over the side with a scrubber only to find that I had a "new" 2 bladed prop. Cannot scrub that away! Now I need another prop. "Yuginots" is a '79 H37C with a 3QM-30. What are you guys running for props on your boats. Are you happy with it? Would you go to a different design? One thing, we will not haul out every year. On our last boat, we hauled every 3 to 4 years. So a prop requiring a yearly haul, unless maintenance could be done on the water, is less desirable. Is there a low drag 2 blade fixed prop? Other than the prop issue, all is coming along well, other than a bit of weather, and financial, slowing of the projects onboard.
Someone had asked about the fresh potable water return on this boat on another thread. This boat has 2 hot water pressure lines going forward on each side of the boat, separated with a plastic gate valve. With this valve closed, normal water travels to the outlets up each sided. When open hot water circulates through the pressure pump and water heater. There is on check valve on the tank lines to prevent back flow, so some does go back a little. This process allows hot water to get up to the fixtures without water waist out of the facet. I believe these lines were installed to help facilitate purging the lines for winter. I just relocated the fittings at their ends for the recirculation. Hope all is well with everyone.....

Re: Prop through a blade!

I have a 83 HC37 with a 3QM30 diesel and a 3 blade Flex-O-Fold prop. I don't say that is absolutely the best but:

1 Chuck Angle of Flex-O-Fold was very helpful during the purchase
2 It made a big difference to sailing performance
3 Reversing is O.K. but the same issues of prop walk etc. still pertain.
4 It pushes very well
5 Compared with the old prop it is very smooth when motoring
6 When sailing the whole issue of free wheeling vs locked in reverse goes away. You just put it in reverse briefly after the engine is stopped to fold it.
7 The zinc can be changed in the water. I have a diver clean 4 times a year and he after inspection he changes the zinc about every 4th to 6th time. I keep a stash of the special zincs.

Given that the price was right and I have been satisfied for 6 years I would probably go the same way again.

One thing is, it is much heavier than a non folding prop so I am careful about slowing the engine before shifting. Some people have lost these props and I suspect it could come from shearing the key. I replaced the bronze key with stainless.

Re: Prop through a blade!

Also sailing with a 3-blade Flex-O-Fold which I installed when I replaced the 2QM20 with the 3YM30. Also have a fixed 3-blade Michigan, 14x14, which I used for the trip to Florida. Had it posted here on SBO but nobody wanted it.

Re: Prop through a blade!

Midnight Sun has a two blade Martec. Very low drag. Works well in forward. Reverse is wishfull thinking. I think I still have the 17x14 that came on my boat when it was new. Anyone who needs it is welcome to it, but I think it might not be enough for a 3qm30. It was originally on a 2qm20.

Re: Prop through a blade!

If anyone knows... The prop is still on the boat, in the water. I either have to dive to measure the old prop or pull it. Does anyone know the original size, pitch, diameter of the prop with a 3QM-30 on a 37? Anyone know about the Campbell Sailor fixed props?...Guy

The Campbell Sailor is a great prop but you'll have a lead time of a few weeks. Accutech in NH does great prop work and can get Michigan Sailors. The difference between Accutech and everyone else is that they actually finely balance your prop and they will have little to no vibration at all.

If your prop threw a blade that is cause for greater issues like stray current corrosion. If your prop was weakened enough to throw a blade your prop strut, shaft and rudder stock should be closely examined. You'll also want to check any bronze seacocks.

I would attempt a thorough electrical/corrosion examination before putting a new prop on as it could suffer the same fate.
